Another organization for NRN, UNDO, is now expanding globally
Sydney Correspondent,
The United Nepali Diaspora Organization (UNDO), established by non-resident Nepalis who separated from the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) during its 10th General Convention, has begun the process of expanding its network globally. With the NRNA currently fragmented, UNDO has reportedly strengthened its presence by expanding its membership.
The organization, established through the active involvement of individuals close to former NRNA President Shesh Ghale, claims to represent the sentiments of Nepal and Nepalis. As a result, there has been a surge of well-wishers on social media and other platforms extending congratulations and best wishes to Shesh Ghale for the success of UNDO.
Currently, the organization is led by Sonam Lama as President, Tenzin Ukyab as Secretary, and Kushal KC as Treasurer, with Ranju Wagle Thapa, Dambar Ghale, Ershad Ahmed, and Dipesh Khatri among the executive committee members.
According to UNDO Treasurer Kushal KC, applications for new memberships have been opened, and preparations are underway for the first general convention to be held in October. “We have our own objectives, goals, and path. We have increased our activity with the noble aim of working for Nepalis worldwide and the motherland, while keeping the organization free from partisan politics. We urge Nepalis in the diaspora to join the organization within the established standards,” he said.
Although the ad-hoc committee has been functioning so far, the Treasurer informed that the organization would operate through a legitimate committee after the first general convention at the end of October. “Our objectives might be similar to those of the NRNA, but our methods are different, and our path is distinct. The entire new generation of the diaspora has joined us. Every ordinary member will feel a sense of belonging to the organization and be free from the smell of partisan politics,” he said.
He mentioned that the recent decisions of the Supreme Court regarding the NRNA, where jurisdiction and responsibilities were conflicting, had made things easier for them. According to him, the attraction toward UNDO has increased as the NRNA has been embroiled in court cases for the past four years, failed to work according to its constitution, introduced an unprecedented three-president system, and some individuals have been exploiting the organization for personal gain.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 29 Poush 2080 BS, a decision at the ministerial level registered and provided a certificate for the establishment of UNDO under the Non-Resident Nepali Act 2064 BS and the Non-Resident Nepali Regulations 2066 BS. At that time, former NRNA Vice President Sonam Lama had applied to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to register the organization. However, after the ministry refused to register a separate organization, he approached the Supreme Court.
A joint bench of Justices Anand Mohan Bhattarai and Til Prasad Shrestha recently opened the way for the registration of other organizations like UNDO.
